Koinonia Academy

The 2020-2021 Koinonia Academy is designed for a small group of middle school students who will meet for several hours, twice a week, in a classical, discussion-based, collaborative learning environment to study Latin, Mathematics, Logic, the History of Science, Ancient Literature, and Rhetoric.

Note: Currently, this course is offered in-person only.

The curriculum includes, but is not limited to:

Latin Henle 1; Gallic Wars, Julius Caesar

Mathematics The Dance of Number, Nickel

Logic The Art of Argument, Larsen & Hodge; Traditional Logic, Cothran

Ancient Literature – The Epic of Gilgamesh; Code of Hammurabi; The Odyssey, Homer; Theogony/Works and Days, Hesiod; The Book of Job; Beowulf; Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

History of Science – Curriculum designed by Kate Deddens, focusing on major scientists and their contributions beginning in antiquity and moving into modernity.

Rhetoric: Writing & Presentation – Curriculum designed by Kate Deddens, based upon over 25 years of writing and writing instruction. Students will complete two separate long-term projects covering important aspects of writing: a research paper in the fall semester and a thesis essay in the spring semester.
