Introductory Latin

Grace MacPherson is a homeschool graduate and a member of the historical first class at Luther Classical College. She holds an A.A. in Liberal Arts from Casper Community College, and is pursuing the Teacher Certification Track B.A. at Luther Classical College. She has previously taught Introductory Latin at Mt. Hope Lutheran School in Casper, Wyoming, and has studied Latin for over ten years, both through homeschool and at the college level.

Students will study Wheelock’s Latin, Chapters 1 through 13, memorizing vocabulary and endings and learning to translate simple sentences.

They will grow in their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary, and in their appreciation of the logic and poetry of translation.

They will develop a familiarity with first, second, and third conjugation verbs in the present tense, as well as the irregular verbs sum and possum, and will also become familiar with first, second, and third conjugation nouns and personal and demonstrative pronouns.

Life application and theology will be integrated into this course through dialogue and consideration of hallmarks of the Lutheran faith.

What Does a Live Session Look Like?
Live sessions for this preceptorial will meet once a week for approximately forty-five minutes. Students will come to the session having already completed any assigned homework from the previous class. Class will begin with a review of last week’s content and homework. The instructor will then introduce any new concepts, allowing time for student questions. The instructor will then lead the students in working together on translation.
