This preceptorial integrates historic, scientific, and distinctly Lutheran perspectives on advanced algebraic topics. It reviews basic algebraic properties and integrates algebraic and geometric principles in the study of analytical geometry. Additionally, it includes the study of higher degree functions, exponential and logarithmic functions. The worldview of the course acknowledges that mathematics has its origin in God’s unchanging, orderly, beautiful, and triune nature.
Overall course objectives include increasing academic virtues through the study of mathematical topics. These virtues include love of subject, increased studiousness, focused attention, and improved diligence and industry through the study of mathematics. Mathematical objectives include student growth in the use of the tools of algebraic logic, correct use of language, construction of logical arguments, and detection of fallacies in arguments.
Course work includes the organization and maintenance of a class notebook, presentations, independent research, and a final portfolio that includes samples reflecting course virtues and work.
The class meets twice per week, although attendance is mandatory at the main discussion class only. The other optional meeting gives students an opportunity to discuss together problem sets ahead of the main class meeting. Classes begin the week of August 18th, 2025.
